Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. In the advance stage it can cause serious illness or even death. There are usually warning signs so it is important to identify melanoma and know about the treatments before it spreads.

Melanoma is 100 percent treatable if it is detected and treated early. If it advances it can metastasize to other parts of the body, where it becomes difficult to treat and can be fatal. In 2008, the American Cancer Society estimated that 8,420 deaths in the U.S. were due to melanoma [4]. Melanoma is a malignant tumor that starts in melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that produce the pigment melanin that colors skin. Most melanomas are black or brown, but some melanomas can be skin-colored, pink, red, blue, or even white [2].

Everyone is at risk for developing melanoma, but sun exposure, number of moles, type of skin, and genetic factors play a role in increasing the risk.
