To prevent skin cancer, there are several things that can be done [7].

Avoid getting a sunburn because UV light can cause skin cancer and wrinkling:
  • Do not intentionally tan.
  • Do not use tanning beds.
Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to any exposed skin even on cloudy days:
  • Use at least 15 SPF.
  • Use a broad spectrum that includes both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.
Wear protective clothing that covers the skin when possible:
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.
Stay in the shade when possible:
  • The sun's rays are the strongest between 10am and 4pm.
Use extra caution while near water, snow, and sand:
  • These may reflect damaging sun rays.
  • There may increase the chances of getting a sunburn.
Get Vitamin D through a healthy diet:
  • Do not seek the sun to get vitamin D.
Examine your skin once a month:
  • Early detection is important for treatment and reducing the chances of death.
